Wrestlers Compete at Freestyle & Greco State Tourney

wr

2015 TX GR State Champ Zach Francis

Members of the Dragon Wrestling team competed at the 2015 Texas Freestyle & Greco-Roman State Championships this weekend in Irving. The tournament was held at the Irving Convention Center and featured wrestlers from across the state competing for the opportunity to qualify for this summer’s USAW National Championships on Fargo, ND. The top four wrestlers in each age division and weight class qualify to represent Texas at the National tournament. Freestyle and Greco-Roman are the styles contested in the Olympics and on the international level across the world. Greco-Roman led off the tournament followed by Freestyle.

CSHS Junior’s Jack Duval and Zach Francis, both captains on the Dragon Wrestling team, captured Greco-Roman state titles in impressive fashion. Duval rattled off 6 straight victories including wins over two UIL state qualifiers and a Prep All-American. Francis made quick work of his bracket, capping it off with a :16 second pin in the finals to take the gold. Fr. Cameron Haddock was the other Dragon to place in the Greco-Roman tournament, finishing fourth. These three wrestlers qualified for Nationals this summer.

The Dragons has a great showing in the Freestyle tournament with five wrestlers placing in the top 4. They were led by two silver medal performances from Jack Duval and Cameron Haddock. Both wrestler had very impressive tournaments but fell just short in the gold medal match. Fr. Andrei Steinjann and So. Adam Lindberg battled their way to bronze medals, while Jr. Zach Francis came out on the short end of a back and forth battle with a UIL state placer for the bronze. Zach just missed an opportunity to advance to the gold medal match when he gave up a late takedown to fall 6-5 to the eventual champion.

All around it was a great performance from our wrestlers and a testament to all of the hard work they have been putting in. We are all excited to see our wrestlers representing Team Texas at the National Duals this June and the National Championships in July.
