Senior Spotlight: Mason's Relentless Style Led Carroll

Dragon senior guard Kirk Mason averaged 12.5 points per game this season. He will play next year at Lamar University.

Kirk Mason was a three-year member of the Carroll Dragon varsity basketball team. The senior has played basketball all his life and has always loved the game. Mason, who averaged 12.5 points per game this season, was one of the top players and leaders on the Dragons this season.

He will play next season at Lamar University in Beaumont. The senior, who graduates Friday, recently did a one-on-one interview with Carroll ISD Intern Jack McCrummen and discussed the season and his future.

How do you as a student athlete maintain good grades and continue to perform well in basketball?
“Grades are what we have to have to be eligible to play, so that is enough motivation right there.”

If you could describe this year’s Carroll Dragon basketball team in three words what would they be?
“Tough, exciting and together.”

What does it mean to the team when you see all the Carroll fans at games?
“It means everything to us. It gives us excitement while playing and it gives us the extra push to play through adversity.”

What is your favorite class?
“PAL (Peer Assistance Leadership)

How do you spend your free time away from school?
“I like to just nap and relax.”

What made you choose basketball over other sports?
“Basketball is a sport where team comes before everything. It has taught me very valuable lessons such as mental toughness and a will to succeed.”

Looking back on your playing career at Carroll, what was your most memorable moment?
During my sophomore year, the varsity was playing Grapevine in overtime.  I hit a 3-pointer to win the game in the last second. Best moment ever!”

What will be your major at Lamar and what are your goals after college?
“I plan to major in Construction Management in the Business Department.  I hope to work in real estate in construction.  I want to eventually have my own construction company.”

If someone has never seen you play, how would you describe yourself as a player/teammate?
 “I think people would say I am a vocal and energetic player.  I try to guide my teammates and team in the right direction every game.”

What player did you always pretend you were shooting hoops as a youngster?
“Steve Nash” (retired NBA point guard)

Describe what it will feel like when you are walking across the stage at graduation?
“I will feel a sense of accomplishment and relief. It’s been great, and I have a lot to look forward to in the future.”
