Wounded Warrior Tournament Returns to Southlake

The Wounded Warrior Southlake Steering Committee (www.woundedwarriorsouthlake.com) is proud to announce that it will be hosting, together with the City of Southlake, a charity softball tournament featuring the world-famous Wounded Warrior Amputee Softball Team (www.woundedwarrioramputeesoftballteam.org). WWAST consists of amputee soldiers who play all over the world against able bodied teams to inspire and educate others and to enhance the lives of amputee soldiers. (The WWAST is not affiliated with the Wounded Warrior Project.)

The 2016 tourney will be held at Southlake’s Bob Jones Softball Park on Saturday, January 23. The all-day event includes a slow pitch softball tournament featuring the WWAST and teams from North Texas, including local teams comprised of CISD softball and baseball players, CISD teachers and coaches, and members of churches, businesses, sports associations, and the Southlake Police and Fire departments.

The tournament culminates with the WWAST team playing against a team of former professional athletes, which previously has included Bobby Witt, Darren Oliver, Kenny Hill, Pete O’Brien, Jeff Russell, Jeff Frye, Kevin Mench, Jeremey Kelly, and Danny Darwin. The event also includes a raffle, concessions, Wounded Warrior merchandise, and a hitting contest for contestants of all ages. Previous sponsors have included the Texas Rangers, the 7-eleven Corporation, Chick-fil-a, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Southlake Kiwanis, Which-Wich, Dickey’s Barbecue, Hilton Southlake Town Square, and Pro Player Foundation. The net proceeds of the event are donated to the WWAST, a 501(c)(3) charity.

Event Co-Chairman, David Heintzelman: “This is our fourth year of hosting these talented heroes, and each year, the event grows in popularity. While I am proud of the financial support that we provide to this worthwhile organization, I am more proud of providing our local community with the opportunity to watch and play with and against these special athletes.” Former Ranger pitcher Bobby Witt stated “I am frequently invited to play in charity events, but I am especially honored to play in the Wounded Warrior tournament with these inspiring heroes and athletes.” The WWAST General Manager, David Van Sleet, commented that “While we play all over the world, the Southlake tourney has become one of our favorite events – the Southlake community has embraced our special brand of softball and inspiration and has provided much-needed support of our organization.”
