City "Decks the Windows" for Holiday Season

With a nod towards famous holiday window displays such as Macy’s, Bloomingdales and Saks Fifth Avenue in New York, Southlake business owners are adorning, embellishing and bedecking their storefronts this holiday season. In a creative effort to increase foot traffic and holiday sales amongst Southlake’s businesses, the City of Southlake is sponsoring its first “Deck the Windows” holiday decorating contest.

Starting November 20, 28 businesses in Southlake Town Square and The Shops of Southlake will be vying for the most enticing and eye-catching holiday window display, which will be voted upon by both residents and visitors. The winner will be announced December 15.

According to Jill Lind, Southlake’s marketing and tourism coordinator, the holiday promotion is based upon the strategy that the most noteworthy holiday display windows typically produce extraordinary sales results, and great window design is effective in drawing shoppers into the store.

“A creative, themed window display not only gets people into the holiday spirit, but is a great opportunity to get people into the stores,” explains Lind. “This promotion is meant to encourage people to shop in their local stores, not online.”

The “Deck the Windows” holiday decorating contest was open to all Southlake businesses and an application had to be submitted by November 10, which mandated all window displays to be ready for public debut November 20, coinciding with Santa Claus’ arrival in Town Square as part of the “Home for Holidays” celebration.

All participants will be included on a map and scorecard that will be posted on various websites (for downloading) and available to pick-up at the Concierge Store in Southlake Town Square (located next door to Five Guys). Numbers corresponding to the score card will be assigned to the participating stores and will be placed within the store window for judges to see when walking the displays. Votes may be cast via text, e-mail or dropping off the score card at the Concierge Store. NOTE: Only one vote per telephone number, e-mail address and name will be accepted.

“This is a fun way to expand the ‘Shop Southlake’ campaign started last year,” says Lind. “Our goal is to make this an annual event.”
