Durham Intermediate student Claire Unruh (pictured left) knows what it means to be patriotic. The sixth grader wrote a winning essay on the topic. Claire’s descriptive writing won the 2010 Patriot’s Pen essay contest Post Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) 5074 in Roanoke.
The piece she wrote titled, “What in the World is Patriotism?” will be judged at the district level.
Here is an excerpt:
“Thankfully, we are not ruled by another country and have free will to our religion, speech, and more. I thought about how lucky we were, and suddenly remembered that it was not really luck that got us here.”
Claire wrote her essay based on an experience she had while spending the Fourth of July holiday with family at Mount Rushmore.
In addition to writing, Claire is involved in soccer, swimming, choir, band and basketball. She is the daughter of Randy and Shelly Unruh.
