Carroll ISD Hosts Preschool Information Night, Registration

Carroll Independent School District has canceled the Preschool Information Night scheduled for Tuesday, February 1 due to wintry weather conditions.

The meeting will be rescheduled and announced by Carroll ISD at a later date.

Carroll ISD has three different types of preschool programs. The first is a program for students with disabilities. This program is legally-mandated for eligible students once they turn three and ends when the student is placed in kindergarten or will be 6 years of age by September 1. These services range from “walk-in” services for students whose needs can be met by attendance in a CISD program (typically speech/language program services) a few times a week, to more intensive full-day services. Placement in the appropriate program is decided by a student’s Admission, Review, Dismissal (ARD) Committee and is based on the results of a full, individual evaluation of the child’s skills. Students must meet eligibility requirements for participation; transportation services may be provided, if necessary.

Carroll ISD also offers a tuition-based blended preschool program. This program is open to students who are three by September 1 and ends when the student begins kindergarten or turns six before September 1.  The final preschool program is the state-mandated pre-kindergarten program. Texas state law requires school districts to provide free half-day preschool programs if there are 15 or more four-year-old students who meet any of the eligibility criteria. Typically Carroll ISD has not met the threshold of 15 eligible students; however a list is generated each year and classes will be established if 15 students become eligible.

Preschool information night is open to anyone interested in the program, but not mandatory for parents wishing to register. The actual registration begins Monday, February 7 and lasts until Friday, February 18. Parents can begin registering their child in person at 8:30 a.m. on February 7 in Room 21 at Carroll Intermediate. Registration will continue in that location from 8:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. Monday through Friday until February 18.

“We will offer an evening registration from three to seven (p.m.) on Thursday, February 17,” said Dr. Cathy Friar, Executive Director of Special Programs. “This evening event will take place in Room 21 at Carroll Intermediate, as well. Parents can turn their registration packets in during the day or mail their completed packets with a postmark no later than Wednesday, February 16.”

School officials do not accept walk-in registrations outside of the posted dates and times. Registration packets must be turned into CIS during the posted hours and are due no later than 4 p.m. on Friday, February 18. The deadlines become extremely important as the district tracks registered students and available seats, utilizing a lottery process to fill the preschool vacancies.

Dr. Friar said preschool classes are expected to be housed on two elementary campuses for the 2011-2012 school year. These two campuses are Carroll Elementary and Rockenbaugh Elementary. She said a lottery will be held at 1 p.m. on February 22 in the CIS library for all available preschool openings and waiting lists. Registration packets may be mailed to Carroll ISD, ATTN: Ms. Debra Neal, 3051 Dove Road, Grapevine, TX  76051.

Information and qualifications for the preschool program can be found on the Preschool Program link on the Special Programs website.
