Carroll ISD Latin Club students are celebrating their achievements this spring. Last month, 21 students participated in the Area C Texas Junior Classical League Convention. The event was held Saturday, Feb. 29, 2011 at Austin College in Sherman.
Here is a list of the academic contest winners:
The students also received 3rd place in vocal solo for John Harvey’s performance of “Panis Angelicus”, 4th in costume for Kat Camp and Matt Santiago’s “Jupiter and Io”, and 5th in oil and acrylic for Kat Camp’s painting of a lion-hearted Roman soldier.
Latin Club members also swept the top spots in the chess competition. Kevin Xu – won first place, Nick Booth won second place and Dakota Pekerti took home third place. The students all say that having chess inside the campus library has really helped them improve their game.
The Latin Club also attended Baylor Latin Day at Baylor University in Waco on Feb. 25, 2011. Two Carroll students (Micaela Lumpkins and Victoria Scigliano) tied for first in the Baylor Latin Day noun parsing bee. Another student (Cindi Kepic) took third in the verb parsing bee. All three students were awarded with books.
On a related note, five Latin Club students who applied to the University of Dallas Latin in Rome program have all been accepted. They will study Latin literature in Rome over 3 weeks in the summer and can potentially earn three upper level college credits from a private university with a well-respected Classics program.
