UPDATE: The Dragons face Mansfield at 6 p.m. Friday at the Birdville Fine Arts/Athletics Complex
DENTON – The Carroll Dragons pulled out a dramatic 3-2 victory Tuesday night against Marcus in the Class 5A Region I Bi-District playoffs at Bronco Field in Denton. The game was settled on penalty kicks after a scoreless overtime. Dragons goalkeeper Oshick Shams was stellar and shutout the Marauders with four consecutive saves. Mac McGuire and Matt Leach scored penalty kicks as the Dragons (22-0-3) remained undefeated and advance to face Mansfield in the second round.
Despite conceding the first goal, the Dragons (ranked No. 2 in the nation by ESPN Rise) rallied back behind McGuire and Karl de Zoten to tie the game 2-2 at halftime. The second half was filled with several near goals but overtime was needed as both teams failed to score. After two 10-minute halves of overtime, the score remained tied. McGuire and Leach were the first two shooters and Shams helped seal the victory.
UPDATE: The Lady Dragons will face Colleyville Heritage at 8 p.m. Friday, April 1 at Dragon Stadium in an area-round playoff.
JUSTIN – Carroll Lady Dragon leading scorer Sophie Groff provided the game-winning goal with less than five minutes left to send her team into the second round of the playoffs. The Lady Dragons upended Flower Mound 2-1 Tuesday night in a Class 5A Region I Bi-District playoff at Northwest Stadium. Groff’s goal with 4:34 left in the game provided the difference as the Lady Dragons advance to meet Colleyville Heritage in the area round.
Carroll improved to 21-4-2 on the season and Groff scored her 21st goal of the season. Lissi Lonsberry scored the first goal for the Lady Dragons to tie the game at 1-1.
