Dragons Face Houston Strake Jesuit In State Semifinal

The Carroll Dragons’ historical ride now heads to Georgetown. The Dragons withstood the West Texas winds and the Plano Wildcats to earn the Class 5A Region I championship and berth in the state tournament.

The No. 2 nationally-ranked Dragons knocked off Plano 1-0 in overtime Saturday afternoon behind the game-winning goal by Juan Carlos Flores. Both teams battled 40 mph winds and a dust storm. Carroll (26-0-3) produced a school-record 20th shutout this season and goalkeeper Oshick Shams did not allow a goal in the region tournament.

Carroll heads to the state tournament for the first time in Class 5A and first time since 2002, when it lost in the 4A state semifinals. The Dragons are also seeking their second state title, the first coming in 2001 in 4A.

In the Region I state semifinal on Friday, the Dragons jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first four minutes against El Paso Coronado. Coronado reached the region tournament after knocking off nationally-ranked El Paso Bel Air. Carroll’s Hunter Horvath scored the game-winning goal as both teams went scoreless the rest of the way.
