AUSTIN – The Carroll Dragon boys’ 4×400 relay team had its sights set on the state championship all season. On Saturday in Austin, this special relay team had a special performance.
The Dragons won the Class 5A state championship in the relay with a time of 3:13.48 just edging San Antonio East Central at 3:13.68 Carroll entered the state track and field meet as the fourth-ranked unit in the country. Team members include: Sabian Holmes, Peyton Williams, Scott Peterson and Mac McGuire. Carroll came back from fifth place early in the third leg. But Peterson pulled within second place before McGuire’s magical anchor leg. McGuire took the lead and held on down the stretch for the state title.
In the 1,600 meters, Carroll’s Trevor Gilley also provided a strong performance with a fourth-place finish. He earned a time of 4:09.37. Kim Parr took eighth in the pole vault event.
