Carroll school officials announced this week that they have listened to parent feedback and will be removing the MyDragons parent portal from the district’s website and reinstating a direct link to Family Access for the 2011-2012 school year.
Family Access is a web-based program that allows parents and guardians to review a child’s schedule, calendar and grades online. CISD simply needs an updated email address from parents in June so that school officials can send them a Family Access user name and password.
Additionally, this next year, parents and guardians will have the opportunity to register their children using the Skyward Online Registration module. This simple, easy to use registration system will be available for all returning students beginning August 1.
Darrell Brown, Executive Director of Teaching & Learning Services, said CISD spent a significant amount of time and effort launching the MyDragons parent portal in August 2010. Parents, however, did not find the system user friendly. They cited difficulty navigating through the site, often had trouble logging on and shared concerns about accessibility.
“We spent a considerable amount of time trying to provide our parents with an online web portal that gave them all the information they needed about their children in a single location,” Brown said. “Unfortunately, they were not fond of the change. On a positive note we were able to register more parents than ever before.”
Brown said ultimately, the system did not operate correctly and parents never made a successful transition over to the new parent portal. “We’ve listened to their concerns and have made a decision to bring a direct Family Access link back for the 2011-2012 school year,” he said.
Brown said it is imperative that Carroll parents contact their child’s campus in June to update their email addresses because those that have provided their correct email address will receive an email with their Family Access username and password. Parents will use these credentials to log directly into Family Access from any page on the CISD website. Online registration will begin August 1and the process should be simple and easy to follow. School officials say although registration documents will be available online, parents will still have to print out an emergency notification form and sign it for each child.
“We understand that this is yet another change that will impact parents,” Brown said. “However the current myDragons portal has not worked as intended and has complicated parents’ ability to monitor their childrens’ progress. We’ve determined that returning to direct use of Family Access is in the best interest of our parents and colleagues.”
