Carroll Revises 2011 Homecoming Date

>Dragon 2011 Football Schedule

Carroll school officials say they have rearranged several 2011 football season special events, including Homecoming, Pink Out and Green Out, but the overall game schedule for the fall remains the same. The changes were the result of conflicts that occurred as the district tried to secure a venue for the annual Homecoming dance.

As a result, the Homecoming 2011 game will happen Friday, September 23, but the dance won’t be held until about a month later. Student Council sponsor Lora Benedetti and Senior High Principal Mike Rhodes met with Athletic Director Kevin Ozee to discuss the schedule for the stadium special events. Originally, officials planned to host Homecoming and Senior Night on the same evening because the size of the homecoming dance crowd limited venues for that event. Feedback from senior parents, however, caused CISD to rethink that position and rearrange the schedule a second time.

“We try to accommodate as many special events and fun activities for our students and their families as possible,” said Julie Thannum, district spokeswoman. “The schedule was complicated by the fact that we were trying to keep the homecoming game and the dance together. That just wasn’t possible given our site limitations and this year’s game schedule so we decided to compromise and rearrange some special events to accommodate parent concerns.”

Ultimately, the Pink Out game held annually to raise funds and awareness for breast cancer research will be held on Friday, September 2 against L.D. Bell. Green Out was moved to the October 14 game against the Coppell Cowboys, which is also Dragon Youth Football night. Senior Night will remain the last home game of the year, October 28 against Saginaw High School.

Rhodes and Benedetti said the district is somewhat limited in finding available venues to host the Homecoming dance because all the high school students are invited to participate and crowds typically reach about 2,200. Prom becomes somewhat easier to plan because the size of the participation class is reduced greatly. Although having the pep rally and game one week and holding the dance at a later time is not ideal, school officials felt it was the best compromise for students and for parents to keep Homecoming and Senior night separated.

“We understood parent concerns and wanted to do what we could to fit everything in and make these events special for our students,” Thannum said. “Although these events affect thousands of fans, the event experience is ultimately for the students. Our goal has always been to put them first and to listen to the concerns of their parents.”

The Homecoming Pep Rally and carnival will be held at Dragon Stadium on Wednesday, September 21, with the crowning of the queen at the carnival. The Homecoming court will be presented during pre-game ceremonies of the Fossil Ridge game on September 23. The Homecoming dance will be held at the Gaylord Texan Hotel on October 29.
