Dramatic Finish Gives Dragons Opening Win

The Carroll Dragons opened the 2011 football season in dramatic fashion.

Dragon junior quarterback Kenny Hill scored the game-winning touchdown on a nine-yard run with 35 seconds remaining to give Carroll a 38-31 victory over Copperas Cove Friday at Dragon Stadium. Carroll avenged last year’s season-opening loss to Copperas Cove thanks to a big night passing from Hill and some timely stops on defense.

Hill was 32-of-43 for 387 yards passing and four touchdowns and did not throw an interception. He led the game-winning drive leading Carroll 52 yards. A long-standing trademark of the Dragon offense is spreading the ball to different receivers. Hill found six different Dragons Friday night.

Sabian Holmes, who flashed game-changing capability moving to receiver in the playoffs last year, produced several big plays against Cove. He had 11 catches for 163 yards and two touchdowns. Peyton Williams add nine catches for 142 yards and one touchdown.

Carroll fought back the entire night after trailing 21-17 at halftime and 31-24 entering the fourth quarter. The Dragons will host L.D. Bell Friday at 7:30 p.m. Bell is coming off a season-opening victory 63-9 against Mansfield Legacy.
