Cross Country Rides To Victory In Corpus Christi Race

CORPUS CHRISTI – Carroll fielded two varsity teams in the girls and boys contest at Saturday’s Islander Splash in Corpus Christi to sweep the competition taking first and second place.

The Lady Dragons Green garnered top honors placing six runners in the top ten spots totaling 22 points, outpacing second-place finisher sister team Lady Dragons Black, who compiled 116 points. Seven Lakes (Katy) finished third with 132 points.  The Dragon Boys Green won the contest with 16 points, one point away from a clean sweep with runners in the 1, 2, 3, 4, 6 and 7 positions.  Not to be outdone Dragon Boys Black took second with 73 points followed by Antonian (San Antonio) in third with 104 points.

The Texas A&M University Corpus Christi hosted Islander Splash, which features 3,000 runners spread among 11 races from college through middle school.

“The tough terrain at the Islander Splash is a draw for us,” Dragons coach Justin Leonard said.  “One section called the roller coaster is 1,000 meters of up and down.  It tests our runners’ level of training including endurance and strength.  We did well.  Everyone stepped up and competed.”
Corpus Christi Varsity Results

Courtney Kriegshauser led the Lady Dragons Green and finished first with a time of 11:45.  Sarah Roe took third place in a time of 12:04.  Julia Sunderland posted a 12:08 time to take fifth place, while Allison Naval finished sixth with 12:09.  Rachel Harper finished seventh with 12:10 and Felice Johnson finished ninth with 12:14. Shelby Chapin rounded out the Green team finishing eleventh with 12:15.

Joe Sansone (pictured/photo courtesy Tim Cory) cruised to victory in the boys contest with a convincing time of 15:21, leading the Varsity Boys Green team to a first place finish.  Ben Golestan finished second in a time of 15:36, Jordan Chavez, finished third in 15:38, Alex Johansson finished fourth in 15:47, Nate Sullivan finished sixth in 15:51 and Trevor Gilley finished seventh with 15:57, while Matt Odneal rounded out the Green team in 19thwith 16:47.

The Dragons Boys Black Team delivered a strong performance with Connor Hendrickson finishing ninth with 16:09, Kyle Scanlon (16:29) in 14th, Regen Hatcher (16:37) in 16th, Chase Wichman (16:49) in 20th, Jacob Pickle (16:52) in 23rd, Alec Garner (17:54) in 64thand Brent Aydon rounded out the team with a 76thfinish and a time of 18:07.
