Dragon Cross Country Teams Seize Gold

DENTON — The Carroll Cross Country Varsity and JV teams turned in winning performances at the Marcus I Invitational 5A contest last Saturday. The team faced a field of district and regional competitors on a very fast course at North Lakes Park.

The Varsity Girls grabbed the two-mile win led by Shelby Chapin and Courtney Kreigshauser (pictured behind Chapin) as nine girls from the Carroll Varsity Teams clocked times under 12 minutes. The entire Varsity Boys team ran under 16 minutes for the 5,000 meter to garner the win with Joe Sansone and Nate Sullivan in the lead for Carroll.

“The Marcus Invitational course requires our runners to be patient and focus on their race strategy,” Carroll cross country coach Justin Leonoard said. “We turned in a strong performance and I am pleased with the results. It was the season’s first test of our training and ability. But, it’s just the start of the season. We need to continue to build our strength, form and endurance.”

Varsity Delivers Gold

The Varsity Girls took first with 34 points, followed by Highland Park in second with 111 points and Flower Mound in third with 120 points. Leading the team, Shelby Chapin finished fourth overall with a time of 11:12, Courtney Kriegshauser landed sixth with 11:14 and third for the team and 11th overall, Allison Naval had a time of 11:31.  Rounding out the Varsity Girls’ top-10 Dragon finishers included Julia Sunderland in 12th (11:32), Rachel Harper in 13th (11:34), Morgan Baulier in 16th (11:36), Felice Johnson in 17th (11:37), Sarah Roe in 23rd (11:44), Molly Tucker in 24th (11:46) and Annie Fillers in 40th (12:01).
The Varsity boys finished first with 27 points. McKinney Boyd secured second with 107 points and Amarillo Tascosa landed third with 120 points. The first Dragon finisher, Joe Sansone, captured third with a time of 15:11, followed by Nate Sullivan in fourth place at 15:26 and Ben Golestan in fifth with 15:30. The next seven boys include Jordan Chavez in 8th (15:37), Alex Johansson in 9th (15:38), Trevor Gilley in 10th (15:42), Connor Hendrickson in 11th (15:53), Kyle Scanlan at 14th (16:00), Regen Hatcher in 21st (16:19) and Jacob Pickle in 27th (16:22).

JV Depth Clear with Strong Showing

The team continues to show depth with solid JV finishes.  Girls’ JV snatched bronze with 87 points.  Hebron finished first with 57 points and Coppell landed second with 80 points.  And, the Boys JV team took fourth place (94 pts), behind Marcus in first (18 pts), Hebron in second (83 pts) and Flower Mound in third (87pts).

For the girls, Madison Keen saw daylight ahead and finished fourth (12:22), Katie Burnham in 15th (12:55), Bailey Giles in 19th (12:59), Miranda Roberts at 23rd (13:02), Sam Young in 26th (13:04) and tied for 29th was Emily Gilbert (13:06) and Kelly Moran (13:06).  Rounding out the top Carroll striders were Sarahy Van Den Dyssel at 50th (13:28.50), Nicole Grue at 51st (13:28.90) and Lily Lopez at 62nd with (13:39).

For the Boys’ JV team, Johnny Kemps finished strong in seventh place with a solid time of 17:27, Luke Lanham in 11th (17:39), Justin Nevarez in 22th (17:57), Sam Smith in 25rd (17:58), Matt Carson in 37rd (18:32), Mark Elliot in 38th (18:33), Eric Vetere in 92th (19:17.30), Sebastain Becerra in 93rd (19:17.70) and  Anthony Munson in 94th (19:17.70.).

 

Southlake Hosts Sixth Annual Invitational at Bob Jones Park, September 10

A primarily grass course winding through Southlake’s Bob Jones Park on White Chapel Road is the site set for the Sixth Annual Southlake Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 10.
