GRAPEVINE – The Carroll varsity cross country boys’ team finished first and the varsity girls’ green and black teams finished first and second at the Sixth Annual Southlake Invitational at Oak Grove Park in Grapevine. The junior varsity girls’ team also ran away with the silver.
With a smart decision to beat the heat, the meet kicked off with a sunrise start at 7:15 a.m. on a new course. Junior Dragon Courtney Kriegshauser won the crown beating a field of 165 competitors. Not far behind, five Lady Dragons rounded out the top 10 spots continuing the success of the strong season opener at the Marcus Invitational last weekend. Sophomore Connor Hendrickson finished fifth in the boys contest leading the team to gold honors.
“Overall it was a good day for us,” Carroll coach Justin Leonard said. “This was a new course for everyone, and we ran well. It allowed us to get a glimpse of how we need to compete at the district race since it will be held here.”
Dragon Varsity Win at Southlake Invitational
In the 5A Girls Varsity 2 mile race, Kriegshauser clocked a time of 11:22 to earn her first win of the season pulling away down the stretch from Justin Northwest’s Kellee McCain, who placed second at 11:23. The rest of the Lady Dragons were: 7. Sarah Roe (11:47); 8. Felice Johnson (11:49); 9. Julia Sunderland (11:50); 10. Allison Naval (11:52); 11. Molly Tucker (11:55); 18. Morgan Baulier (12:09); 20. Annie Fillers (12:10).
The Dragon Green team took first place with 42 points and the Dragon Black finished second with 88 points over Coppell, which finished third with 90 points.
In the 5A Boys varsity 5,000 meter, Dragon sophomore Connor Hendrickson finished fifth with a time of 16:05. The Dragons won the meet with 93 points, followed by Plano East with 105 points McKinney Boyd with 117 points. Rounding out the top finishing Dragon boys were Kyle Scanlon, 19th (16:37), Regen Hatcher 27th (16:44), Jacob Pickle 28th (16:47), Chase Whichman 35th (16:56), Alec Garner 47th (17:07), Brent Aydon 79th (17:36) and Johnny Kemps 80th (17:36).
JV Teams Again Showing Solid Results and Effort
The Dragons came away with the Silver In the 5A Girls JV 2 mile race with 31 points, narrowly losing Gold to Coppell with 28 points. In the Boys JV 5,000 meter contest the team had a solid showing with an 11th place out of 26 teams.
