Anniversary Celebration

Dawson Middle School hosted a grand celebration Tuesday, October 4, 2011 to mark the 10th anniversary of the Carroll ISD campus.

The school was named after George Dawson who, at the age of 98, learned to read. Mr. Dawson’s inspiring story lead Carroll ISD to name the campus after him.

Relatives of Mr. Dawson attended the celebration including his surviving children, Dorothy Dawson, Darrell Dawson and Sallie Dawson the widow of George Dawson Junior.  Also in attendance were numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren of George Dawson Sr. The family was the guest of honor during a campus-wide assembly in the DMS gym where faculty and staff talked about what it means to work at Dawson Middle School. Also attending the event was the author who wrote a book about George Dawson and his commitment to learn despite his age.

The hallways at DMS were filled with student drawings of Mr. Dawson. After the assembly the family was invited to attend a special reception.
