Cross Country Team Dominates Nike South

THE WOODLANDS – Facing some of the best competition in the state, the Carroll Dragon cross country teams swept the medal stand at the Nike South Invitational. The Dragons earned dominating wins in all four divisions — Boys Elite, Girls Elite and Boys and Girls Varsity.

“Everyone competed hard, but it doesn’t mean anything until November 12 at the state meet,” Carroll cross country coach Justin Leonard said. “We need to keep the same focus we had during this race to win at state.”

The Lady Dragons racked up 57 points with all seven girls finishing in the top 26 places surpassing second-place Kingwood by 36 points. Shelby Chapin (right) led the Lady Dragons with an 18:36 sixth-place finish. Courtney Kriegshauser (18:50), Sarah Roe (18:56), Rachel Harper (18:57) and Felice Johnson (19:09) finished 14th, 16th, 17th and 23rd, respectively. Julia Sunderland (19:16) and Allison Naval (19:17) rounded out the top seven at 24th and 26th.

Joe Sansone’s third-place 15:63 finish led the Boys Varsity ELITE team to the win with 32 points. Five Dragons finished in the top 12 besting Palos Verdes, California second-place spot tallying 75 points, and The Woodlands third place finish with 132 points.

Carroll’s Ben Golestan (15:46) finished sixth, Jordan Chavez (15:49.5) was seventh and Trevor Gilley (15:49.9) eighth. Alex Johansson (12th place, 15:54), Nate Sullivan (14th, 15:56) and Connor Hendrickson (24th, 16:17) rounded out the top seven.

Continuing in the tradition, both Girls and Boys Varsity teams topped the competition.  The Lady Dragons took top honors with 27 points with five runners in the top ten led by first place finisher Annie Fillers (19:31). The Woodlands finished second with 58 points and Humble Kingwood with 83.

Sarah Cory (20:00), Morgan Baulier, (20:12), Taylor Ullmann (20:17) and Madison Keene finished in 3rd, 6th, 8th and 10th.  Lauren Berry (21:22) rounded out the six runners in 28th.

In the Boys contest, Kyle Scanlon bested second-place finisher Jacob Ryan from Geneva School by nearly 30 seconds with 16:21 leading the Dragons to a convincing 21 point win over second place finisher The Woodlands with 66 points.

With five runners in the top eleven, Jacob Pickle (16:52.8), Alec Garner (16:52.9), Chase Whichman (16:59) and Matt Odneal (17:06) finished 3rd, 4th, 6th and 11th.   Johnny Kemps (17:21) landed 21st, Regen Hatcher (17:42) secured 32nd and (17:54) rounded out the eight man squad in 44th.
