Southlake DPS New Police Chief

New Southlake DPS Police Chief

Chief Stephen  Mylett was named the department’s new Police Chief after a search of several months to find the right individual who represented the type of leadership that will enhance the City of Southlake’s goals in regard to public safety and security.  “Chief Mylett’s experience in law enforcement and his reputation for strong leadership: honor and integrity, both personally and professionally, made him a standout in his field,” said Assistance City Manager Jim Blagg.

Before the search began for a new Police Chief, city leaders developed a profile of what they were looking for in a Chief and also met with DPS Police Officers to gather their input. “Chief Mylett not only meets but exceeds those expectations and also shares our vision for the City of Southlake.  He strongly represents our core values and is committed to helping achieve the high standards of excellence and goals that we have set forth,” said City Manager Shana Yelverton.

Mylett started his policing career in the United States Air Force before joining the Corpus Christi Police Department. He has spent 21 years in law enforcement including time as a Patrol Officer, Police Lieutenant, Police Captain, Police Commander in the Office of Accountability, and as the Assistant Chief of Police (Operations Bureau).

Mylett has a bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice from Midwestern State University and is scheduled to graduate with his master’s degree in Criminal Justice Leadership and Management in the spring of 2012.

He has also earned a Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officer Standards and Education (TCLEOSE) Instructors Certificate and has more than 3000 hours of TCLEOSE certified training.  Chief Mylett has also received his manager’s training from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) and has taken the Texas Tactical Police Officers Association (TTPOA) SWAT command course.

Mylett has already hit the ground running and says he is, “proud to be a part of Southlake’s rich tradition.”

A reception for Chief Mylett will be held Friday, November 18, 2011 from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
