ARLINGTON — The Carroll Dragons relied on a play-making run game to advance to the third round of the Class 5A Division I playoffs. The traditional pass-oriented Dragons found a strength in running against Cedar Hill on Saturday and it helped power them to a 40-7 blowout victory at Cowboys Stadium. The Dragons improved to 12-0 and advance to the Region I semifinal against Arlington Bowie next Saturday at 5 p.m. at Bedford’s Pennington Field.
The Dragons’ running game produced four touchdowns and 240 rushing yards, all powered by quarterback Kenny Hill and sophomore running back A.J. Ezzard. Ezzard’s breakout performance included 20 carries for 121 yards and two touchdowns. Hill added 21 carries for 123 yards and two touchdowns. He also passed 125 yards and moved to 5-1 as a playoff starter.
Carroll’s defense was equally impressive. The Dragons limited Cedar Hill’s big plays and held the Longhorns to an average 3 yards per carry. Cedar Hill (8-4) finished with just 227 yards. Dragons kicker Drew Brown also had a busy afternoon. He had four field goals (25, 49, 34, 25).
