Holiday Crime Initiative

As part of our Holiday Crime Initiative we will have increased officers patrolling the city streets and local shopping areas especially around Town Square.  It is buzzing with parents and their children not only shopping but also seeing the Christmas lights and of course, Santa and Santa’s Village.

We want to remind drivers to slow down and take extra precaution as families and their children will be using the crosswalks as they travel around Town Square.  Please come to a full stop at all stop signs and look both ways to make sure it is clear.

We also want to remind shoppers to put all of their valuables in the trunk of their car.  Shopping bags, iPads, iPhones, radar detectors and other electronics are easy targets for thieves.  “Please don’t leave these items visible in your vehicle even if it is locked. It only takes seconds to break a window and steal your valuables,” said Traffic Lt. Mike Dunn.

Southlake DPS Police Services has some other safety tips for you.

  • Do not leave your car running and unattended even for a minute while you shop in a store or stop to get gas. An unattended vehicle presents a crime of opportunity, car theft.
  • Do not leave your purse or wallet open in a shopping cart or on a counter. Thieves are looking for easy targets this time of year.
  • Avoid carrying large amounts of cash and pay with a credit card or check when possible.
  • Be aware of your surroundings and park in a well-lit area especially at night.
  • Have your keys in your hand when walking to your vehicle.
  • Beware of strangers approaching you for any reason. If you feel you are being watched or sense danger go into the nearest shop and ask for security or call 9-1-1 if you feel threatened.

Christmas and New Years are also a time for parties and celebrations.  Please don’t drink and drive. Make sure you always have a designated driver. Your life or the life of someone you love depends on it!

Southlake Police Chief Stephen Mylett says, “We want residents to feel safe and secure while traveling in the city or shopping at area stores and Town Square. With your assistance we can help to ensure that everyone has a safe and happy holiday!”
