New Debate Club Prepares for Inaugural Season

Carroll ISD middleschoolers can sharpen their debate skills by joining the new Speech/ Debate Club just for 7th and 8th grade students. The Southlake Speech/Debate Club will kick-off the season Friday, Feb. 24 from 4:30 p.m.- 6:00 p.m. with it’s first club meeting. New students are welcome to attend. Organizers will focus on activities for all participants. Current club members are already scheduled to take part in required training in a scheduled workshop on Saturday, Feb. 25.

The club plans to meet weekly on Fridays through May 25. Club members will have the opportunity to debate other school districts in the Dallas-Fort Worth area twice this term, giving students the opportunity to apply what they have learned.

According to club organizers, forensics is a unique and valuable activity for students because it promotes success, teaches critical thinking, and helps students belong.  The Southlake Speech & Debate club says it’s excited to provide this opportunity to Carroll ISD 7th and 8th grade students. The group says communication skills that students develop through forensics will help them succeed in the classroom, business world and a number of other vitally important realms. Organizers say through this club, students learn to communicate their ideas in an organized, persuasive and professional manner and add that students with speech and debate training go on to become leaders in government, media, business, science and education.

If your student is not yet a member of the club, you can sign him/her up for membership at www.dfwspeechdebate.com. The membership fee includes 14 weeks of training (2/24-5/25) in preparation for the April and May competitions. Organizers also plan to create a  club “yahoo” group for announcements, homework and other debate related communication. Future club emails will be posted through the yahoogroup.  Questions can be emailed to: dfwspeechdebate@gmail.com. For Club and Workshop Information and registration, click here.
