For a fourth consecutive year, Carroll Elementary School participated in the Captain Hope Birthday Box Outreach program. Captain Hope is an organization devoted to meeting the needs of kids in area homeless shelters. Organizers developed the Birthday Box Outreach concept after hearing a story from a mother whose daughter had celebrated her birthday in the parking lot of the shelter with a cupcake saved for her by volunteers. Certain Hope volunteers realized how many birthdays occur in shelters where there is nothing for the child.
At the lead of the Outreach Committee, CES students and parents brought in shoe boxes, small gifts, and toiletries. Committee members wrapped all of the boxes in birthday paper and organized the gifts. Students spent an afternoon after school “shopping” and filling these boxes for boys and girls aged 4 – 10. Students made 232 birthday boxes were for children who would otherwise have nothing to open on their birthdays.
Captain Hope’s Kids is a Dallas-based non-profit that focuses to assisting the needs of homeless children and their families.
