FM 1938 Opens to Traffic Week of June 11

The Texas Department of Transportation announced on Wednesday, June 6 that Phase One of the new FM 1938 roadway located primarily within the Town of Westlake is anticipated to open to two lanes of traffic sometime during the week of June 11.

Tarrant County Precinct Three County Commissioner Gary Fickes said, “The opening of this newest farm to market extension on the state highway system is a huge transportation improvement for the northeast part of Tarrant County. It provides a direct connection between IH-820 and SH 114.”

Recently, the Town of Westlake Board of Alderman voted to name the new FM 1938 through Westlake as Davis Boulevard.  The cities of Southlake and Keller have not yet taken action to rename the portion of the road between Southlake Boulevard and Randol Mill Bend.

Work will continue over the next several months to complete Phase One of the project.  Two lanes of the new roadway are being opened to allow for a more direct route to State Highway 114.  With the opening of this new roadway, traffic which currently travels through Southlake by way of Randol Mill Bend may proceed north crossing through the newly constructed intersection of Dove Road and Davis Blvd. directly to SH 114.   Ultimately, FM 1938 will be a six-lane divided roadway in Westlake and a four-lane divided roadway within the cities of Keller and Southlake.  Southlake Public Works Director Bob Price stated, “This project is the culmination of many years of hard work by many people and municipalities in the Northeast Tarrant County area.  We are excited and proud that this day has finally arrived for the opening of this new roadway.”

In the next several weeks, construction of the new intersection of Randol Mill Bend and FM 1938 will begin.  It is anticipated that Randol Mill Bend between FM 1938 and Maranantha Way will be temporarily closed for installation of underground utilities and the reconstruction of several hundred feet of Randol Mill Bend.  Access to the local affected properties will be provided by an alternate route identified by the contractor. During the road closure, all other traffic will be detoured by way of the new roadway to Dove Road.

Phase Two of the project, between Southlake Blvd and Randol Mill Bend is currently under design by a joint effort of the cities of Southlake and Keller and Tarrant County. The acquisition of the right-of-way for the Phase Two portion of the project is being acquired by Tarrant County.  The funding for Phase Two of the project is identified and construction is currently anticipated in 2015.
