It may seem like summer is still in full swing, but the beginning of the school year is fast approaching. The first day of school for students in the Carroll Independent School District is Monday, August 27, 2012. The Southlake Department of Public Safety would like to remind residents to mark their calendars now so they can start planning ahead and adding extra time to their daily commute when classes begin later this month.
Drivers are reminded to take extra precautions as children will be crossing busy streets and intersections. Police Chief Stephen Mylett said, “We want to make sure students arrive at school safely. Police Officers will be patrolling area schools to help ensure that drivers slow down and watch for children in crosswalks as well as students getting into and out of vehicles near school zones.”
DPS is asking everyone to obey all traffic warning signs including “no cell phone use” when lights are flashing in school zones. Also, parents might want to double-check for any changes in traffic patterns near schools and “time” their route if they will be traveling near construction zones.
Again, Southlake Police Officers will be patrolling area school zones to help keep traffic moving smoothly and safely. Those caught violating traffic laws will be subject to a citation and a fine.
Please drive carefully. Let’s all work together to make the school year safe for everyone.
