The Carroll Dragon boys’ and girls’ golf teams competed in Lubbock last weekend and opened the season and in grand fashion. The boys won first place and the girls took second.
The Dragons were coming off a 7-under par round of 281 starting the second day and continued their excellent play with senior Matt Gilchrest leading the way. He shot a 6-under 66 at the Rawls course winning the tournament individually with a 10-under par total. Hunter Glenn and Corbin Kasten also placed in the top 10. Carroll shot 294 as a team on its way to a 25-stroke victory in the Red Raider Classic.
The Lady Dragons started the second round 10 shots back from the leaders and came out with a strong second-day performance to make up the deficit. Led by freshman Ellie Youree’s round of 70 and sophomore Ally Alonzo’s 71, the girls rallied to finish at 290, 2-over par and five shots out. Youree was 3rd individually winning a playoff on the 3rd hole.
