NORTH RICHLAND HILLS – The battle of two state powerhouses lived up to the hype. Carroll and Trinity produced another memorable matchup before a standing-room-only crowd in the Class 5A Division I Region I semifinals last Saturday.
The Dragons outlasted Trinity 16-7 behind an heroic performance by fullback/linebacker Steven Bergmark to reach the 5A Region I Final against DeSoto. Bergmark, a junior, had a blocked a field goal, recovered a fumble, scored Carroll’s only touchdown and had a game-sealing interception. Dragon kicker Drew Brown also had a big impact with three field goals, including a key 42-yarder with 8:23 left in the game to give Carroll a two-score advantage. Brown added a 25-yarder in the first quarter and one from 31 yards in the third.
The Dragons (12-1) face DeSoto (13-0) at 2 p.m. Saturday at SMU’s Ford Stadium.
Carroll led 10-7 at halftime after Trinity held its only lead at 7-3. Bergmark’s one-yard TD run gave the Dragons the lead for good. His late interception also helped end the Trojans’ rally. This battle featured the defenses as both offenses were held under 300 yards of offense.Trinity, behind its size advantage on the offensive line, managed just 113 yards rushing and was held scoreless in the second half.
Dragons quarterback Kenny Hill finished 17-of-25 passing for 112 yards. He also rushed 29 times for 130 yards. Carroll’s leading receiver was Mike Gardiner with six catches for 45 yards and Keaton Duhon had three catches for 34 yards.
