McElroy Named New York Jets Starting QB

Former Carroll product Greg McElroy will make his first NFL start Sunday when the Jets face San Diego.

Former Carroll Dragon product Greg McElroy has been thrust into the New York spotlight. The second-year quarterback was named the New York Jets starter this week by head coach Rex Ryan.

McElroy replaces the struggling Mark Sanchez, who was benched after Monday night’s loss to the Tennessee Titans which eliminated the Jets from the playoffs. McElroy led the Dragons to a 16-0 Class 5A state championship in 2005 in his only year as starter. McElroy went on to more championship fame at Alabama and helped lead the Crimson Tide to the BCS National Championship in 2009.

McElroy was a 7th-round draft pick of the Jets in 2011. This will be his first regular season start and he leap-frogged Tim Tebow on the depth chart to gain the starter role. McElroy made his NFL debut on Dec. 2 replacing Sanchez against the Arizona Cardinals and led the Jets to a 7-6 victory.
