Phase 1 of North Kimball Avenue is Complete

While commuters have been enjoying the improved driving surface and additional driving lanes on North Kimball Avenue over the last couple of months, they will now also enjoy the added amenities which were the finishing touches on Phase 1.

Phase 1 of the North Kimball Avenue project widened the existing two lane asphalt roadway to a four-lane concrete divided roadway from State Highway 114 to Kirkwood Boulevard. The much needed widening allows for improved traffic flow and alleviates traffic congestion. Along with the functional aspects of the project, Phase 1 incorporates aesthetic components into the design. The finishing touches on Phase 1 of the project include ornamental trees and perennials in the landscaped medians, stone retaining walls, brick screening walls, sidewalks and pedestrian handrails, and street lighting. With the installation of these aesthetic features, Phase 1 of North Kimball Avenue is now complete.

Since the beginning of Phase 1 construction, City staff has been working with property owners north of Highland Street to acquire right of way and easements for the widening of Phase 2 of North Kimball Avenue from Kirkwood Boulevard up to the intersection of East Dove Road.  As of January 2, 2013, the City will have access to the right of way and easements of the remaining properties on Kimball Avenue, north of Highland Street. Construction of Phase 2 will begin in mid-2013 after relocation of all franchise utilities, including an Atmos gas line which will need to be relocated to the west right of way from its existing location in the middle of the roadway.
