Four Dragon Track Athletes Headed For State Meet

Dragon distance runner Trevor Gilley (far right) qualified for state in the 1,600 and 3,200 meters last week in Lubbock at the Region I meet.

LUBBOCK – Carroll distance runners Courtney Kriegshauser and Trevor Gilley are headed back to the Class 5A state track and field meet and two newcomers are joining them.

Kriegshauser, the defending state champ in the 1,600 meters and Vanderbilt signee, returns seeking a repeat after winning the Region I championship last week in Lubbock. She also qualified as an at-large in the 3,200 after a third-place finish, but will be replaced at state in the event by teammate Shelby Chapin. With last year’s title, Kriegshauser became the first Lady Dragon to win an individual state track title since 2004.

Gilley, an Ole Miss signee,  narrowly missed a Region I championship in the 1,600 and took second place by less than one second. He also qualified and will run at state in the 3,200 meters after finishing second. Dragon Joe Sansone finished near the leaders in the 3,200 taking fourth. Last year, Gilley earned a sixth-place finish at state in the 1,600 meters.

Lady Dragon hurdler Sarah Robinson is also headed to state with a second-place finish in the 300 hurdles.

Kami Mickens placed fifth in the 400 and the girls’ 4×400 relay team placed sixth and set a school record with a time of 3:49.69. Team members included Mickens, Taylor Henderson, Madysen Hunter and Robinson. The boys’ 4×400 relay team took fourth and included Aaron Hoagland, Chris Hogan, Spencer Sunstrum and Tariq Gordon.

The state track and field meet will be held May 10-11 at the Mike A. Myers Stadium at the University of Texas in Austin.
