With the Dragons’ 8-0 victory, Hughes earned his 400th victory at Carroll. Earlier this year, he posted his 500th career victory.
Following the victory, the team surprised Hughes with a celebration at Carroll Senior High School.
“This was the most special milestone for me because Carroll has been a very special place that I love, and it’s so difficult for a coach to maintain success over a long period of time at one place,” Hughes said.
Hughes started at Carroll in 1997 when the program was in Class 4A. Along the way, he has led the Dragons to the 4A state title in 2002 and 5A state finalist appearance in 2008.
The night was nearly even more special. Pitcher Tyler Alexander took a perfect game into the seventh inning before it was broken up with an infield single. Alexander, a TCU signee, finished with 16 strikeouts and allowed two infield singles. The Dragons, ranked No. 7 in the nation by Baseball America, improved to 22-3 overall and 10-1 in District 4-5A.
Carroll hosts Keller at 7 p.m. Friday and travels to face Fossil Ridge at 7 p.m. on Friday. Listen to Dragon baseball online here.
