Lady Dragons Fall To Plano West In 5A Final

Carroll senior Meghan Murphy and the Lady Dragons set a school record with 30 victories this season.

GEORGETOWN – The Carroll Lady Dragons’ hopes for a Class 5A state championship fell short Saturday at Birkelbach Field.

Plano West completed an undefeated season with a 4-1 victory in the title game and earned back-to-back state championships. The game was scoreless at the half. Carroll fell behind 4-0 and broke up the shutout on a goal by senior forward MaKayla Braun.

The Lady Dragons finished the record-setting season 30-3, which set a school record for victories. It was Carroll’s fourth trip to the state tournament and it was their first return trip since winning the title in 2008.

The Lady Dragons reached the final with a 1-0 win the against San Antonio Johnson. Freshman Grace Cory scored the game-winner early in the second half. Carroll loses 14 seniors next year, including six who have signed with colleges. One of those is the Lady Dragons all-time leading scorer Sophie Groff, bound for South Carolina next fall.
