Dragons Drop Series Opener Against Martin

GRAND PRAIRIE – The Carroll Dragons suffered their first playoff loss Thursday and its send them to the brink of elimination.

Martin rallied for a 2-1 victory in the Class 5A Region I final series opener at QuikTrip Park. The Warriors picked up two runs in the top of the sixth to take the lead. Carroll had the tying run at third base in the bottom of the seventh, but the runner was tagged out at the plate on a suicide squeeze bunt attempt. Dragon lefthander Tyler Alexander suffered his first loss of the season, but had 13 strikeouts in six innings.

Carroll (34-5) took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning keyed by Chris Altimont’s triple. He scored on Nic Motley’s RBI single to right field. The Dragons, ranked No. 4 in the nation by Baseball America, were held to five hits. Martin finished with six.

Game 2 is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Friday at QuikTrip Park. Sophomore righthander Ben Leeper will start for the Dragons.

A deciding Game 3, if necessary, will be at 6 p.m. Saturday at QuikTrip Park. The winner of the series advances to next week’s state tournament in Round Rock.
