Play it Safe this July 4th!

Each year fireworks injuries send many adults and children to the emergency room. The Southlake Fire Department wants everyone to ‘Play it Safe” during the July 4th Holiday. We also want to remind all Southlake residents that selling, possessing or using fireworks in the City of Southlake is illegal. Fines for selling or using fireworks within the Southlake City limits can be as high as $2,000.

Here are a few other important tips and reminders about fireworks safety and penalties.  You cannot ignite fireworks:

•           From a motor vehicle or shoot fireworks towards another vehicle.

•           Within 600 feet of any church, hospital, licensed childcare center or public/private school.

•           Within 100 feet of a place where fireworks are sold.

•          Within 100 feet of a place where flammable liquids or flammable compressed gasses are stored or dispensed.

Most importantly, do NOT let your children handle or set off fireworks.  Most fireworks related injuries happen with children.  Fire Chief Mike Starr says, “Accidents with injuries occur all too often with fireworks. Following these safety guidelines will help ensure that your family has a safe and memorable July 4th.”

For a safe, family friendly and really fun time, bring everyone down to the Southlake Stars and Stripes Spectacular in Southlake Town Square. Preparations are in full-swing for this year’s event.  Stars and Stripes will be held on Wednesday, July 3rd from 6:00 p.m.- 11:00 p.m. in Southlake Town Square.

So plan now to gather your family and friends and come enjoy all the activities that have become Stars and Stripes traditions.  The Southlake Community Band will kick off the evening with patriotic music in Family Park,  Uncle Sam will entertain the crowd with his stilt walking skills, and we will celebrate our nations independence with a patriotic ceremony and fireworks show that you won’t want to miss.

There will be some new activities at Stars and Stripes this year as well.  From photo ops with a military humvee, new crafts and games and additional kid’s areas, there will be something for everyone in the family to enjoy. For a complete list of activities and event information, please visit the event website at www.StarsandStripesSouthlake.com.
