A Successful 2013 for the City of Southlake Community Services Department

As the new year gets underway, Southlake’s Community Services Department reflects on a very successful 2013. The Department was highly recognized at conferences throughout the year in many different categories.

City of Southlake Parks and Recreation staff attended the Texas Recreation and Park Society Regional Conference this past October. During the conference, Southlake received awards for the following categories:

  • Recreation Professional of the Year: Ryan McGrail was selected as the 2013 Recreation Professional of the year for the north region of Texas. Ryan has worked with the City of Southlake for sixteen years and does not only demonstrate hard work and leadership, but also a passion for recreation. Outside of all his duties with the City of Southlake, Ryan currently serves as the T.A.A.F. Region 4 Director and the NFL Punt, Pass and Kick Dallas Cowboys State Chairman for Texas and Oklahoma.
  • Excellence in Programming:  The Southlake Therapeutic Recreation Program was selected for excellence in programming. Southlake is one of the few cities in the metroplex that offers therapeutic recreation. Each year, new activities are introduced and the program expands to meet the demands of participants.
  • Parks Design Excellence: The City of Southlake and Schrickel Rollins and Associates were recognized for the design of Southlake’s newest park, North Park. This premier park features three multi-purpose fields, a concession/restroom facility, multi-use trails, playground, pavilion, large pond and plenty of open space. North Park is home to the City’s Youth Flag Football Program and the Southlake Carroll Lacrosse Association.

In September the City was awarded with the T.A.A.F. Platinum Member City Award. This award is given for outstanding registration support from teams, individuals and T.A.A.F. training programs. Cities are awarded each year from bronze to platinum based on how many teams they have that participate in T.A.A.F. events. The City of Southlake was the only City in the region to receive a platinum-level award.

The Southlake Senior Activity Center received the Texas Recreation and Park Society State Lone Star Programming Achievement Award for “Arabian Nights.” City of Southlake Senior Center staff worked hard to come up with a new and exciting event for our Southlake seniors. The theme “Arabian Nights”  was decided and our active seniors and their adult family members were taken on a magic carpet ride. This authentic event included a Mediterranean dinner, music and belly dancers. The award will be presented to Southlake Senior Center Coordinator, Soheila Phelps, at the annual Texas Recreation and Park Society Institute and Expo that will be held February 18-21, 2014 in Corpus Christi.

Congratulations to the City of Southlake Community Services Department for a very successful 2013! For more information, please call (817) 748-8019.
