City of Southlake to celebrate National Senior Center Month in September

The National Institute of Senior Centers (NISC) has deemed September National Senior Center Month and the City of Southlake Senior Activity Center is celebrating by promoting LIFE all month long.

LIFE, which stands for Learning, Independence, Friends and Energy will be promoted via the following events and programs during September:

  • Learning – expand your knowledge. During the month of September, educational seminars and presentations about the rich and unique history of Texas, Cyber Fraud Prevention, Senior Health Service Providers and Back Pain Management will be available.
  • Independence – live on your terms. During the week of September 14th, they will highlight SSFI & their mission to celebrate your independence & resilience. SSFI is a non-profit organization who partners with the Southlake Senior Center to subsidize the cost of various events & outings.
  • Friends – enjoy life, laughter & feeling connected. During the week of September 21st, consider joining the Southlake Senior Center for one of their social events including Potluck Bingo, MMOW luncheon and Movie Day.
  • Energy – discover health & vitality. During the month of September, consider attending one of the Southlake Senior Center’s exercise programs which include Zumba Gold, Line Dancing, Chair Yoga, Tai Chi, Fun & Fitness, & Chair Pilates.

The NISC’s national celebration of senior centers began in 1979, with Senior Center Week celebrated in May. The concept gained support of other aging organizations, as well as the full Senate and the House Select Committee on Aging.

Since then, thanks to the U.S. Conference of Mayors Aging Task Force, numerous mayoral proclamations have declared Senior Center Week.  In 1985, NISC was instrumental in achieving the first Senior Center Week Presidential Proclamation signed by President Ronald Reagan. In 2007, NISC designated the entire month of September as Senior Center Month to give centers greater flexibility in scheduling celebratory events.

In September, Mayor Hill will present the Southlake Senior Activity Center with a proclamation declaring September National Senior Center Month! If you are 55 or better, be sure to take part in the National Senior Center Month celebration through September.
