Possible Increase in Aircraft Noise over Southlake due to Strong West Wind Flow

1535x1035 DFW Airport

The City of Southlake has received the following information from the DFW Noise Compatibility Office:

The National Weather Service is forecasting strong west winds this weekend.

West wind flow will occur from about 12AM Sunday morning, 13 December, through about 9AM Monday morning, 14 December.

Two periods of west cross winds exceeding 20mph may occur. The first will be from about 12AM to about 3AM Sunday when winds are predicted to reach 21mph. West wind velocities will increase again to as much as 31mph from about 11AM to about 6PM Sunday.

It is likely that the diagonal runways, 13R/31L and/or 13L/31R, will be required for aircraft departures and/or recoveries during periods when west cross winds velocities are highest.

The FAA and DFW have collaborated to use the diagonal runways as little as safely possible.

Ultimately safety of a flight, including the runway used, is the responsibility of each aircraft plane commander, the person best equipped to determine when a crosswind velocity is unacceptable.

More information about the response to high velocity west cross winds is available on DFW’s website at the link under “High Velocity West Winds”:
