Durham Intermediate School “Potato Day”

Durham Intermediate students recently took a break from the classroom and got some hands on learning in the garden. One science lab planted 9 varieties of potatoes, 5 of which are experimental and have not been on the market.

Students were divided into 9 groups for the plantings, and followed instructions using teamwork to successfully plant their potatoes. Master gardeners and parent volunteers assisted all the student groups during the planting process. Students will harvest in May, and study their results with DIS staff, Master Gardeners, and Texas A&M researchers. Executive Chef Charles Youts, from the Classic Cafe in Roanoke will provide potato recipes to be sent home with students along with some of the harvest.
