Villarreal Named Rockwall ISD’s Lone Finalist for Superintendent

Dr. JJ Villarreal has been named the lone finalist for Rockwall ISD Superintendent.

Dr. JJ Villarreal, Carroll ISD’s Assistant Superintendent for Student Services, has been named the lone finalist for the Rockwall ISD Superintendent position.

Rockwall ISD announced the decision at a special board meeting held Monday morning. Villarreal has worked in Carroll ISD since October 2011 and previously served an Assistant Superintendent in his hometown of Temple.

“Rockwall is very blessed to be gaining an exceptional school leader,” said Carroll Superintendent David J. Faltys. “I’m very proud for him and his family. He put a lot of processes in place to ensure greater efficiencies in our Student Services division and this is a great loss for Carroll ISD. Still, we realize that our Dragon leaders are going to be identified for potential leadership positions, and we are excited for this new phase in JJ’s career.”

Dr. Faltys said he and his Cabinet are working on a transition plan until Dr. Villarreal’s position can be hired.

“My family and I have been greatly blessed during our time here in Carroll ISD,” said Dr. Villarreal. “I feel good about what we’ve accomplished as a leadership team, and I’m grateful for what I learned working alongside Dr. Faltys. I’m looking forward to this new opportunity, but it’s tough leaving my Dragon family.”

Villarreal’s role in Carroll ISD included supervising Principals, Curriculum and Instruction, Technology, Special Programs, Athletics and Fine Arts. He recently helped organize and oversee Carroll ISD’s Strategic Plan and worked closely with the Capital Needs Planning Committee and CLASS, Carroll Leadership Academy for Supporting Success. He has served in public education for more than 25 years and will now oversee a district with 19 schools, including two high schools.

Texas law requires candidates for the Superintendent position to wait 21 days after they are named a lone finalist before they can sign a contract.

Villarreal’s wife, Kim, is a teacher at Rockenbaugh Elementary and they have three children – Josh, Matt and Anna – attending Carroll ISD schools.
