Padres Land Dragon Standout in First Round of MLB Draft

Carroll Dragon shortstop Hudson Sanchez’s life changed drastically last week as a ballplayer’s dream came true.

The Dragon standout was selected 24th overall by the San Diego Padres in the Major League Baseball draft. Sanchez becomes the highest drafted baseball player in Carroll history.

“I am very excited for Hudson,” Carroll coach Larry Hughes said. “This is a credit to his hard work and dedication to becoming a better ballplayer. He has improved each year and has tremendous potential. The Padres have chosen a player with all the tools to become an elite prospect.”

This season, Sanchez led the Dragons hitting .374 with six home runs and 29 RBI and his increased power over the past season drew more attention from pro scouts. Sanchez, who also signed with Texas A&M, was on the scout’s radar all season as more than 20 more scouts attended the Dragons’ first scrimmage this season.

Sanchez’s size, position flexibility and age were enticing to pro scouts. He is 6-foot-3 and 17 years old. He has also played third base for the Dragons and some scouting reports mention a possible move to the outfield.

Carroll senior outfielder Zach Farrar was also selected in the draft. He was taken in the 26th round by the Chicago White Sox. Farrar has signed with Oklahoma to play football and baseball.
