The Carroll Dragons open the 2016 on Friday at Dragon Stadium.
Carroll hosts Tulsa Union at 7 p.m. in the season opener for both teams. The Dragons are led by returning senior quarterback Mason Holmes and an experienced defense.
These teams have produced two exciting finishes the past two seasons. In his first varsity start, Holmes led the Dragons to a 34-30 comeback victory in Tulsa last season and avoided an 0-2 start. Carroll trailed 23-7 at halftime, but rebounded with four consecutive TD drives in the second half.
Carroll took the lead for good with 2:27 left in the game on a Lil’ Jordan Humphrey touchdown run capping an 80-yard drive.
In 2014, the Dragons won 42-41 in overtime at AT&T Stadium with a trick play on a two-point conversion.
This is also a battle of premier championship programs from each state. Carroll is tied for the most state titles in Texas history with eight. Union also has eight state championships.
Union enters the season as the No. 1-ranked team in Oklahoma’s Class 6A-I division ahead of Broken Arrow and Jenks.
