On Monday, the Carroll School Board approved a 2017-2018 calendar that ends the school year by June 1 so that secondary students and staff can participate in summer school, college courses and professional development.
Three calendar options were under consideration and feedback on the various options was mixed. The Board ultimately approved Calendar Option No. 2 after extensive discussion and input by CISD staff and parents and members of a calendar subcommittee.
The approved calendar includes a start date of Monday, Aug. 28. The final day of school and high school graduation will be Friday, June 1. This earlier release date allows secondary students flexibility for college courses and less constraint on CISD’s summer school scheduling. Elementary students will have early release days for baseline assessments the first five days of the school year.
Carroll ISD is exploring the possibility of applying to become a “District of Innovation” through the Texas Education Agency for the 2018-2019 school year. Districts with this designation have the flexibility to start school earlier than the traditional “fourth Monday or later” date. If Carroll is approved and given this designation and elects to start earlier in August, it would shorten the length of the 2018 summer break. Therefore, the newly-approved calendar with a June 1 release day would help compensate for the shorter summer break better than the other calendar options. The two options not chosen did not have the last day of school until the second week of June.
The Board received feedback on the calendar options from the District Advisory Committee, which is comprised of CISD staff, parents and community members. Janet McDade, Assistant Superintendent for Student Services, also provided a report to the Board regarding feedback the district received via email from parents and staff.
The approved calendar has five full days off for Thanksgiving break and eight days off during winter break, with students not returning until Wednesday, Jan. 3
