Single Runway Set to Close for Three Days at DFW Airport (Updated)

The DFW Airport will be closing Runway 18L/36R on Friday, 4/21 through Monday, 4/24 for the ongoing Runway Status Light installation project.

The closure this weekend will begin at 11:00 PM, Friday night, and continue through Monday, 6:00 AM. The winds are forecast to shift from south to north overnight Friday night into Saturday morning, and continue with north winds throughout the weekend.  The north winds are also forecast to be gusty Saturday afternoon. This means:

  • FAA will need Runway 31L for jet departures beginning Saturday morning and continuing through the weekend; and
  • The gusty north winds may make it challenging for FAA to track aircraft departures on the extended runway centerline, meaning there could be some wind drifting of flight tracks over the Town Square/1709 areas.  In the recent use of Runway 31L, the winds were light, enabling FAA to consistently track aircraft on extended centerline.  This can be likened to swimming across a river against a strong current versus a river with little current.

Citizens with inquiries or complaints are encouraged to contact DFW Airport by email at, or on the Noise Complaint Hotline, at 972-973-3192 (manned 24/7). Follow-up response calls or emails will be provided, when requested.

Update 4/21/2017: In addition to this weekend, there will be a full closure Runway 18L/36R on these weekends as well: April 29-30; May 6-7; May 13-14; May 20-21; June 3-4; June 10-11; June 17-18; and June 24-25.

  • Runway 18L/36R is the primary departure runway on the west side. During its closure:
    • While the winds are out of the north, Runway 36L will be the used for arrivals and Runway 31L will be the primary departure runway on the west side.
    • While the winds are out of the south, departures will shift to Runway 18R and arrivals will shift to Runways 17L and 13R.
    • The use of the outboard runways (diagonal runways and Runway 17L/35R) will likely be extended at night to 11pm.

Update 4/28/2017: The scheduled closure of runway 18L/36R for April 29-30 has been cancelled due to unfavorable weather conditions.
