The Dragon Core Value of compassionate service is on full display in Carroll ISD as student groups have joined together and organized multiple donation drives for Hurricane Harvey relief.
The Dragon Band, Cheerleaders, STUCO, Emerald Belles, and CREW have joined efforts to put on a donation drive for Hurricane Harvey victims who are being housed at the Dallas Convention Center. These organizations are accepting donations all day on Friday at various CISD locations, and once their drive is complete, the donated items will be driven to Dallas in the Dragon Band trailer to aid those who have evacuated the disaster in south Texas.
These student groups had originally planned on spending their Friday traveling to Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, to cheer on the Dragon Football team in the first game of the season. However, the school district announced Tuesday that the buses reserved for these students were needing to be utilized by FEMA for the unprecedented statewide and southwest regional emergency caused by Hurricane Harvey. With this news, these students decided to use their game day energy to serve those in need, and began preparations for the donation drive.
The Dragon Football team and their families also spent their week organizing donation efforts, in addition to prepping for their season opener against Broken Arrow. The Dragon Football team has been collecting cleaning supplies to send to coaches in Kingwood to begin the cleanup effort taking place in that area. Additionally, the Dragon Volleyball team is partnering with their opponents for tonight’s game, the Arlington Lamar Vikings, to collect needed items at their game. All of the donations they receive tonight will be delivered to Trusted World, a nonprofit group in Dallas, tomorrow morning.
All of these efforts by student groups kick off a few weeks of compassionate service by all Dragons, as the district prepares efforts and finalizes plans for a Hurricane Harvey relief drive in the first few weeks of September. Ozarka, Carroll ISD and Rockwall ISD plan to team up at the September 15 Dragon Football home opener game to collect supplies and bottled water to send to the Houston area.
The Carroll core value of compassionate service is always encouraged by all Dragons, especially in times of tragedy and disaster that face our friends in south Texas. Stay tuned for ways that the Southlake and Carroll communities are continuing to help relief efforts in the wake of Hurricane Harvey.
