Successful Start for Both Soccer Programs

Even sub-freezing wind chills couldn’t stop the hot start to the new season for both varsity soccer programs. The Dragons and Lady Dragons were in action on Thursday, January 4 to kick off their schedules.

Lady Dragons Open With Scoring Barrage

The Lady Dragons played in their first game of the National Elite Prep Showcase (NEPS), a three-day national soccer showcase that matches top teams around the country against each other. The Lady Dragons welcomed in the team from Bulcholz, Florida.

It only took three minutes for the Lady Dragons to find the back of the net courtesy of a Maddie Drenowatz goal. Drenowatz wasn’t done though, just two minutes later she notched another goal on an assist from Taylor Tuft. Drenowatz would finish with four goals and three assists and Taylor Tuft had four total assists in the match.

The Lady Dragons went on to win 9-0. Goalkeeper Madi Martin earned her first shutout of the year. Georgie Phelps scored three goals and added 2 assists, Madeline Bryant and Sarah Hornyak both added a goal apiece.

Dragons Take Two on Opening Day

The Dragon Soccer team opened their season with two games held at Birdville Stadium. They took on Arlington Lamar and Odessa Permian in tournament play.

In the early match, junior goalkeeper Harrison Pustilnik notched his first of two shutouts on the day in a 1-0 victory over the Lamar Vikings. In the second match of the day,  Cole O’Haughty was in on both goals, scoring one and assisting Carlos Trevino in another. The Dragons went on to win the second match 2-0.

Upcoming Schedule:

Both programs are back in action today, Friday, January 5 when the Lady Dragons take on Austin Westlake at Dragon Stadium at noon, and the Dragons travel back to Birdville to take on Arlington Bowie at 3:30.
