Walnut Grove Student Wins Area Spelling Bee

Nachtmusik (Ger.). Night-music. A serenade

That’s the word that sealed the victory for Walnut Grove Elementary School fourth-grader Satya Menon in the Area 14 Spelling Bee. Meton competed against over 20 other students recently in the event held at Cross Timbers Middle School in Grapevine.

The twenty round event, Menon faced a little bit of adversity and bounced back. When judges questioned one of the spellings she had delivered, she assured them that she had spelled the word ‘gazpacho’ with a ‘Z’. The judges reviewed the tape and ruled in her favor. According to her teacher, Donna Clarrissimeaux, Satya displayed exactly what a Walnut Grove Dragon is through her handling of a tough situation.

“She really showed resiliency in that moment and proved that when the going gets tough, the tough get going,” Clarrissmeaux stated. “Satya reached down within and had to pull herself back together to not only keep going but to win the spelling bee.”

Menon was not the only Dragon to show off their spelling skills in the area bee. Dawson Middle School student Armin Amin finished third overall in the Area Bee. For Carroll ISD to place two in the top three in the area is a great accomplishment.

Menon will advance to the Regional Bee at TCU on March 1, where she will compete for a spot in the Texas State Spelling Bee.
