Softball Goes 5-1 in Turf Wars Tournament

The new turf on the softball field got broken in this past weekend as the Lady Dragon’s hosted the 2018 Turf Wars tournament. The six games in three days for the Lady Dragon’s featured everything from impressive offensive outputs to a late inning come from behind victory on day two.

The tournament opened up on Thursday with a display of the high powered Lady Dragons offense during the two games. First, the Lady Dragons defeated Frisco Independence 11-1. Elizabeth Egel and Katie Gee both assisted in the run production with home runs and Kelly Shackelford took the win after an impressive pitching outing. The Lady Dragons racked up 14 hits in the first game. In the opening day’s nightcap, it was all about the Dragon offense. The Lady Dragons took down Lake Dallas 16-0 behind an outstanding game from Madison Cashon, who went 3-4 in the game. Morgan Mizouni, Katie Gee, Lizzie Thomas, Abigail Stuart and Elizabeth Egel all had multiple hits in the second game as well.

Day two of the tournament saw the Lady Dragons fall behind 0-4 early in their opening game versus the Sandies from Amarillo. The Lady Dragons pieced together a late-inning outburst fueled by only one extra-base hit to earn their third victory of the tournament 9-4. Riley Carter, Abby Stuart, and Avery Zeigler all had multiple hits. The win went to Allie Nuenke. The second game of the day saw the Lady Dragons come from behind again versus Eaton. Gaby Garcia’s three runs double in the sixth inning sealed the four victory of the weekend for the girls. Allie Nuenke picked up her second win of the day in a relief appearance.

The final day of the tournament matched the Dragons versus Reedy High School. This close game required an extra frame to decide the winner. Piper Harness stepped up and knocked in the winning run to seal the walk-off victory and opportunity to run the table for the Lady Dragons.

The last opponent of the tournament for the Lady Dragons was local foe, Denton Guyer. Another close game that came down to a late score from Denton Guyer would end the Lady Dragon’s bid for a perfect Turf Wars record. The team ended the tournament with a 5-1 record and will return to action Tuesday night when they take on Trinity at Trinity High School.
