Dragon Football Opens Season with Win

The Dragons traveled to the Gopher-Warrior Bowl to take on the South Grand Prairie Warriors for the first time ever in football Thursday night. After a scoreless first half, the Dragons, behind outstanding defensive play and a late-game flurry of scoring, went on to win the first game of the 2018 football season.

The second half opened up and the Dragons found the end zone quickly when defensive lineman Alex Kingston stepped in front of an SGP screen pass, picked it off, and took it in for the first Dragon points of the season. The Dragons would convert a two-point conversion and take an 8-0 lead.

The Warriors would tie the score and send the game into the final quarter knotted up at 8 a piece, but the Dragon offense would show up in full force to close the game out.

Senior running back T.J. McDaniel would find the end zone on a short run eluding multiple tacklers and put the Dragons up 15-8 early in the fourth. After a Joe McFadden field goal, quarterback Will Bowers sealed the victory with a 69-yard touchdown run late in the fourth quarter.

The Dragons would go on to win game one of the 2018 season by a final score of 25-8. Bowers finished with a game-high 97 yards rushing. McDaniel ended with 89 yards on 24 carries and one touchdown. The Dragon defense had three interceptions on the game.

The Dragons will open the home portion of their schedule next Friday night at Dragon Stadium versus Colleyville Heritage. Kickoff will be at 7 p.m.
