Carroll ISD students, grades 9- 12 who are interested in a year-round internship working with the Board and Community Relations Department may now apply for acceptance into the Communications, Marketing and Sports Information (CMSI) Internship for the 2019-2020 school year.
Josh Yonis, Carroll Class of 2011 and current Assistant Director of Communications for the Southland Conference spent his high years serving as an intern in this program.
“If it weren’t for Carroll ISD offering CMSI and the leadership within that program,” Yonis says. “I would not be in the position I am today. That program started my career.”

Members of the CMSI internship play an important role throughout the school year assisting on numerous projects including the gameday experience at Dragon Stadium on Friday nights. With the installation of the new video scoreboard at Dragon Stadium in 2010, Carroll ISD staff saw an opportunity to tap students’ talents to assist with production.
CMSI interns arrive at the stadium hours before kickoff to inspect video equipment, coordinate sound checks and oversee on-field presentations. During the game, these talented students are running the cameras feeds that are seen on the jumbotron, coordinating on-field presentation and assisting with other marketing initiatives for the Board and Community Relations Department.
There will be new opportunities this year for the students to assist in the creation of social media campaigns for the various Dragon athletic and fine arts programs. Students who may be interested in photography or graphic design have opportunities to assist in those areas as well.
CMSI extends past football season by opening up opportunities for the interns to get real-world experience throughout the school year and summer. CMSI interns can work on their journalism skills by assisting in writing stories for MySouthlakeNews. Interns are encouraged to use their voices to tell the stories that are occurring on their campuses from a student’s standpoint.
Interns will be expected to attend scheduled meetings where they will have the opportunity to network with industry professionals or work on current projects for the district.
Carroll ISD Student grades 9-12 who are interested in applying for CMSI need to fill out the application found here, and submit them to Justin Dearing, Assistant Director of Communications via email (email@example.com) or in person at the Carroll ISD Administration Building (2400 North Carroll Avenue).
