The City of Southlake Gears Up for National Walk to School Day 2019

Let’s take a walk, to school that is. The 2019 National Walk to School Day which is part of Safe Routes to School, is Wednesday, October 2. Parents, volunteers and other students are encouraged to travel to school together on foot or bike for arrival and dismissal.

Safe Routes to School is a nationwide initiative to help students have many options to get to school safely.

Walking and biking to school is a great way for kids to stay active. Simply increasing foot traffic can help ease congestion in school zones, and it’s great for the environment. Everybody wins!

The City of Southlake Traffic Management Division needs Dragon parents to volunteer for this event. You can sign up to help students cross the street at any Carroll ISD elementary school for arrival, dismissal or both by filling out the Walk to School Day Volunteer Signup Form. Signups close at noon on Friday, September 27.

You do not have to be a volunteer or an elementary school student in order to participate. All students and their parents are welcome to consider walking to school if it is feasible for them on any day of the school year.

If you are behind the wheel that day, you can also help keep Southlake kids safe by obeying all traffic laws: slow down, stop at stop signs, yield to pedestrians at crosswalks, put away cell phones and be on the lookout for other people around you.

The City of Southlake and Carroll ISD are doing their part by ensuring that only people who have completed a background check will be allowed to volunteer for the event, and our Department of Public Safety is aware that there may be more children crossing our streets.
